This year’s Five Rings Gala was nothing short of magical, a weekend that embodied the true spirit of community, dedication, and sweaty joy. It wasn’t just an event; it was a heartfelt celebration of growth, grit, and gratitude.
From powerful belt promotions to a successful Grapple-a-Thon fundraiser and an unforgettable barbecue, this weekend reminded us why Five Rings isn’t just a Jiu Jitsu academy, it’s home.
Adult Belt Promotions: Marking Milestones on the Journey
The mat was buzzing with emotion and pride as we celebrated several major promotions. A huge congratulations to Coach Dan, who earned his second-degree black belt, a symbol of over six years of unwavering dedication, mentorship, and black belt-level excellence.
We also welcomed new blue belts into the ranks:
Taylan Dulac
Paul Goebel
Robert Keyes
Evan King (though away traveling, his presence was felt!)
These students have shown resilience, heart, and commitment, reminding us all that Jiu Jitsu is a journey, not a destination. Or, as Coach Ted Lasso might say:
“Success is not about the wins and losses. It’s about helping these young fellas be the best versions of themselves on and off the mat.”
Grapple-a-Thon 2024: Rolling with Purpose
Our annual Grapple-a-Thon was another massive success! This year, over 60 kids and adults hit the mats in support of our Emergency Tuition Fund, raising nearly $4,000 to help ensure that no one has to step away from Jiu Jitsu due to financial hardship.
That’s the heart of this academy: when one of us stumbles, we all rally.
Barbecue Brotherhood: A Feast Worthy of Champions
After the training came the feasting, and oh, what a feast it was! Thanks to the incredible efforts of our BBQ Dream Team, we enjoyed a whole-hog barbecue that brought everyone together in delicious style.
Shout-out to the pitmasters who stayed up through the night, stoking fires and infusing flavor into every bite:
Paul Lively
Ryan Kivett
Tyler Colson
Aaron Stanek
Fletcher Ray
Leonard Jones
Mike Lennon
Sam Lennon
Mike Rosenfeld
Vincent Soriano
“You all made barbecue the way we play Jiu Jitsu: with heart, soul, and a whole lotta hustle.” – Coach Lasso vibes
A Celebration of More Than Just Belts
This weekend wasn’t just about belt promotions, rolling, or barbecue. It was a reminder of something deeper:
That gratitude builds strong communities
That none of us gets here alone
That showing up for each other, on and off the mat, is what truly defines us
From every smile to every side dish, from every dollar raised to every heartfelt hug, one thing was clear: we are stronger together.
Five Rings: More Than an Academy
The Five Rings community continues to shine because of the way we show up, not just in competition, but in life. This weekend was a powerful reflection of that truth.
So here’s to the moments we shared. Here’s to the journey we’re on. And here’s to the tribe that makes it all possible.
